No one on this earth is the same. People have different appearances, different personalities, different abilities. Now, for the most part, all of these differences still fall into the category of a "normal" human being - something genetic, an injury, a learned skill. But then again, there are other anomalies that are not so "normal," and can cause a person to be cast out from society. The freaks, the surreal, the supernatural - these are the people we whisper about, stray away from, shut out. More recently, it seems, there has been a new group added to that category - those who have come to be called "shifters." By some means, this small group of humans has gained the ability to shift their bodies into the forms of animals. Some have been shifters all of their lives, others were possibly involved in a horrific accident, and still for some, the transformation was completely random. But, whatever the case, they now have something in common with each other. Unfortunately, what they share is the very thing that outlaws them from continuing life in normal society. They are forced to move to a place with others of their type, a place where no normal human will ever come in contact with them. And this place? Well...the Variel Academy of course... the last refuge for animal shifters..
