Lily walked into the cafe, went up to the counter, and ordered a hot chocolate with a shot of french vanilla. She had always liked it that way. It was quicky made and she took her mug over to a comfortable seat in the corner. Setting it down, she shrugged out of her warm coat and pulled a book out of her purse. She opened to the page she'd marked and started reading, occasionally taking sips from her drink.
Dustin had still been at work when she'd gone out this morning. She was sad she'd missed him, but at least he could get a few hours of sleep before she got home again. Her first stop had been the barn, then she'd stopped at the mall to buy a Christmas gift for Dustin, and one for Deductive. They were sitting in her truck, all she had left to do was wrap them, which she'd do while Dustin was sleeping, which he would hopefully do directly after work. The last thing she needed was for him to walk through the door to the cafe.

Elise had just dropped off her last dog for the day. The client's home was just around the corner from the cafe, and Elise figured she'd indulge herself with a warm treat. The bells over the door tinkled as she entered. Elise headed for the counter, pleased that there was no line. She knew exactly what she wanted. Elise ordered a large grasshopper with extra whipped cream, and once she received it, turned to find a cozy seat in which to relax. She grinned as she recognized Lily, but did not want to interrupt her reading. Elise went to one of the large armchairs in the corner of the cafe and curled up within its soft confines. She took her first sip of her drink, and let out a contented sigh.

Lily glanced up from her book as the bells tinkled, alerting that someone had entered. She was glad to see that it was not, in fact, Dustin. As Elise ordered, Lily finished the chapter she was on, marked her page, and put the book back in her purse. Grabbing it and picking up her mug, she moved to sit next to young woman. "Hey, how's it going? Chilly out, isn't it? Can't wait for Christmas, though."

Glancing up as Lily sank down in another overstuffed chair next to her, Elise smiled warmly. Hi! Things are going well. I have quite a few dog walking clients so I'm working on saving up a little bit. While Lily settled herself into the chair, Elise savored her grasshopper, glad not only for its smooth taste, but its warming effect on her as well. Yes, it's getting cold. She raised her mug, grinning. Thank goodness for the cafe, huh?
The girl's eyes shadowed at the mention of Christmas. When was the last time Christmas had represented the "season of good cheer," as she had heard it called? Elise could barely remember. It would have been the last Christmas she shared with her parents, so many years ago. Her smile did not reach her eyes as she answered Lily, images of cold and lonely holidays spent in the great-aunt's oppressive home running through her memory. Yes, Christmas.
Elise brightened a bit then, realizing this would be her first Christmas out from under the great-aunt's thumb. She could make her own decisions, and spend the holiday however she wished. Her smile was genuine this time. I think I am looking forward to it, too!

Lily nodded. The cafe was a godsend, especially on cold days. At the mention of Christmas, she noticed a wierd look on Elise's face, but was glad when it was soon replaced by a smile. "Excellent! I love Christmas. I think my parents are even coming back from Italy for a week to spend the holidays with me. You are more than welcome to join us. In fact, I insist." She sipped on her drink, a satisfied smile on her face as she contemplated the possibilities. She was sure Dustin wouldn't mind another guest, and her parents always loved people, especially when they could make someone's day a little better.

Elise's eyes widened. To spend Christmas with a real family? She couldn't wrap her head around that thought. Quietly, she replied, Thank you, very much, for your generous offer. But I would not want to impose on your family, especially at such a special time of year.

"Don't worry about it, you're not imposing. You are an honored guest." Lily smiled at the young girl. To think that she thought she would be a problem, a nuisance. On the contrary, her parents would love her, and probably fuss over her. "It'll be a lot of fun."
